Introduction: PREDATA Presented at DES Show Málaga

A few weeks ago, part of the Biuwer team participated in DES Show Málaga, one of the benchmark events for digital transformation, artificial intelligence, data and technologies applied to business.

During the event, we had the opportunity to present PREDATA to different participants from the Spanish and international ecosystem: technology companies, data professionals, organisations interested in digital transformation processes, representatives of initiatives linked to the Data Economy, and organisations working on interoperability and the secure exchange of information.

PREDATA is a project we have been working on for almost a year and a half, funded by the European Union and Spain under the Data Spaces Products and Services call.

For Biuwer, DES Show Málaga has been a particularly suitable environment to share the vision behind PREDATA: a tool designed to prepare, process and refine data before its incorporation into Data Spaces.

More than simply attending an event, our participation is part of the project’s dissemination, validation and transfer activities, bringing its results closer to an ecosystem where data, interoperability and collaboration between organisations are becoming increasingly relevant.

DES Show Málaga: A Benchmark Environment for Digital Transformation and the Data Economy

DES Show Málaga brings together companies, institutions, startups, technology experts and innovation leaders who are driving digital transformation from different perspectives: artificial intelligence, automation, advanced analytics, cybersecurity, cloud, enterprise software and data management.

This context makes DES a benchmark environment for projects such as PREDATA, as it allows us to connect the project’s technological vision with the real needs of organisations seeking to improve how they capture, prepare, share and exploit their data.

At a time when the Data Economy is gaining prominence in Europe, Data Spaces are becoming a key element in enabling collaboration models between organisations. However, for these spaces to work, data must be properly prepared: it must be reliable, understandable, interoperable, secure and suitable for reuse.

That is why presenting PREDATA in an environment such as DES Show Málaga has allowed us to place the project within a broader conversation: how to transform scattered and heterogeneous data into prepared assets capable of generating value in digital ecosystems.

The Shared Challenge: Before Sharing Data, It Must Be Prepared

One of the ideas confirmed when speaking with organisations from different sectors is that having data does not necessarily mean being ready to share it, exploit it or integrate it into collaborative initiatives.

Many companies and institutions have large volumes of information, but this data is often distributed across systems, databases, spreadsheets, applications, APIs or files. It may also present quality issues, non-homogeneous formats, errors, duplicates, incomplete values or sensitive information that must be protected before any further use.

In the context of Data Spaces, this challenge is especially important. It is not enough to connect systems or enable exchange mechanisms. It is necessary to ensure that the datasets being incorporated meet minimum requirements for quality, traceability, privacy and interoperability.

Before a dataset can be incorporated into a Data Space or used in advanced analytics, artificial intelligence or inter-organisational data exchange processes, several issues need to be addressed, such as:

  • Data quality and consistency.
  • Format standardisation.
  • Removal of errors, duplicates and anomalies.
  • Anonymisation or pseudonymisation of sensitive information.
  • Generation of synthetic data for testing, validation or innovation.
  • Preparation of interoperable structures.
  • Export to compatible formats and systems.
  • Traceability of the transformations applied.

This is precisely where PREDATA is positioned: a tool designed to facilitate data preparation before its incorporation into ecosystems for data exchange, exploitation and reuse.

What We Presented: PREDATA as a Preliminary Layer for Data Spaces

During DES Show Málaga, we presented PREDATA, an acronym for Preparation and Refinement Environment for DATAspaces, a project developed by Biuwer to create a cloud-based advanced data processing tool oriented towards Data Spaces.

The core idea behind PREDATA is simple: to help organisations prepare their data before sharing, publishing, exploiting or integrating it into collaborative environments.

PREDATA enables the configuration of visual data preparation workflows, combining sources, transformations and destinations through a flexible interface. Its goal is to allow different user profiles to define reusable processes that transform heterogeneous data into more reliable, secure and interoperable datasets.

Its main capabilities include:

  • Connection to data sources such as databases, files, APIs or applications.
  • Creation of visual workflows to automate preparation processes.
  • Transformations aimed at cleaning, refining and improving data quality.
  • Anonymisation and protection of sensitive data.
  • Generation of synthetic data.
  • Detection of anomalies and handling of errors.
  • Export to standard and interoperable formats.
  • Preparation of datasets for subsequent integration into Data Spaces.

PREDATA is designed to act as a preliminary layer. It does not replace a Data Space, nor does it aim to become one. Its role is to help data reach those spaces in better conditions of quality, security, traceability and interoperability.

Conversations with the Ecosystem: Validation, Interest and Future Use Cases

Participating in DES Show Málaga allowed us to present PREDATA to different actors in the digital and data ecosystem, generating valuable conversations about real needs, adoption barriers and potential application scenarios.

These conversations were especially useful in validating three key aspects of the project.

First, data preparation appears as a cross-cutting need. It does not affect only large corporations or public administrations, but also technology SMEs, startups, sector-specific organisations, platform operators, data providers and organisations seeking to move towards collaboration models based on reliable information.

Second, the importance of accessible and visual tools was confirmed. Many data preparation processes still depend on manual tasks, isolated scripts, custom developments or highly specialised technical knowledge. PREDATA seeks to reduce this barrier through configurable, reusable and traceable workflows.

Third, the event reinforced the relevance of Data Spaces as infrastructure for the digital economy. As data sharing and reuse initiatives grow, so does the need for solutions that act before connecting to the space itself: preparing, validating, protecting and structuring datasets.

PREDATA as Part of a Dissemination, Validation and Transfer Strategy

The dissemination of results is an essential part of the PREDATA project. Beyond technological development, we believe it is essential to share progress, lessons learned and use cases with the business, technology and institutional ecosystem.

Participation in events such as DES Show Málaga allows us to bring the project closer to potential users, collaborators, organisations managing data initiatives, and entities interested in improving their data preparation and exchange processes.

It also facilitates feedback collection, the identification of real needs and the validation of functionalities in specific scenarios. In this sense, every conversation held during the event helps connect PREDATA with the practical challenges organisations face when preparing data for interoperable environments.

This article is part of that communication and transfer effort: explaining what we are building, why it is relevant and how it can help more organisations participate in the Data Economy and in future Data Spaces.

Looking Ahead: Better Prepared Data for an Interoperable Digital Economy

Our participation in DES Show Málaga reaffirms a central idea: the future of digital transformation will increasingly depend on the ability of organisations to share, prepare and exploit data securely, interoperably and efficiently.

PREDATA was created to contribute to this goal by offering a tool that facilitates the preliminary processing of data and helps reduce one of the main barriers to entry into Data Spaces: the technical and functional preparation of information.

Presenting PREDATA in a benchmark environment such as DES Show Málaga allowed us to share this vision with participants from the Spanish and international ecosystem, gather feedback and reinforce the project’s role within the Data Economy.

At Biuwer, we will continue advancing the development and dissemination of PREDATA, convinced that data quality, governance, privacy and interoperability will be key factors for innovation in the coming years.
